RESPIRATION(S) NOW!

At the crux of some of the current crises that the world is enduring right now, is breath: African-Americans are being denied the right to breathe; COVID 19 is attacking lungs; and the lungs of the planet are in need of restoration. Life on our planet is inter-connected. Divisions and exclusions will insure the continued separation of humanity. Together we live, or together we perish. Humans are the problem and the solution.

Compassionate, righteous indignation, coupled with action for legislative justice is needed to shape a future that includes racial equality, universal healthcare, and planetary stewardship. What does a future look like that allows us all to BREATHE freely?! Each citizen of this world has a RIGHT to BREATHE.

Juror Statement: Respiration(s) Now! Is a collective portrait of American discomfort. Reconsideration of long existing wounds. These interdisciplinary works weave together a multifaceted narrative about collective grief, breath, isolation, and the value of human life. Public space is forever changed. Public discourse has taken to the immediacy of the streets and social media. Perception is not reality, and with this multi-person perspective, we begin to see a fuller clearer picture. Hopefully the online nature of this show allows for rumination on these works in the viewer’s private space during this collective pause.
