“Fractured States”  Opening  Fri.  April 28,  6-9pm

King’s newest work in Fractured States discusses what happens when connections cannot be maintained. Dissonance. Loss. Inertia. Conceptually the work is trying to become whole again yet the separations are more glaring and tenuous. And the fight for connection in the face of dissolution has directly influenced this new body of work, all of which has a collage element. Even if it seems components are being forced together, in the end, each piece that goes into the artwork has a purpose.

Fractured States, like A Delicate Balance and Fragile States before it, is a reflection of the belief that we are on a circuitous path of creation, illumination, and spiritual progression towards one’s place with the universe. It is not always an easy progression and there is strife and loss on the way. And sometimes the simple belief that things will be better is enough to hold even the thinnest thread together.

“Loss, Change, Stasis”   Opening  Fri.  April 28,  6-9pm

Loss, Change, Stasis, an exhibition of constructs by Angela A. McElwain, reflect the strength of women when confronted with loss, especially of the self, innocence, death, separation, abuse, etc. Included in the exhibition is Jochebed’s Dream, part of an installation which will simulate a museum exhibit including a display case with artifacts related to the subject, Jochebed, and her loss of her child, Moses. Currently a work in progress but projected to be completed later this year.

Referencing her constructs Ms. McElwain states, “When I work with secondary material, I am reminded the cast-aside can be transformed into a thing of impactful eloquence. The objects I use must be visually interesting and tactile, since I began by noticing their physical structures, then, by handling the things I sense their vibration. One of my favorite materials is lead because of its contrary qualities: it is plastic metal, the surface is beautiful yet marred, the greyness is industrial yet strangely comfortable.”

Ms. McElwain’s work, stimulating and intuitive, speaks for itself.

“‘Round the Block: Prints & Paintings”                  Opening  Fri.  April 28,  6-9pm

Modlin’s latest work is a dialogue between her large woodcut prints and her paintings. An eventful family wedding inspired the subject for this body of work. The palette is muted, emulating the hand-colored prints. his exhibit features Canopy, a series of 3 large woodcut prints: Canopy I, II, and III and the paintings: A Bunch, Tango a Deux, Bride, Just Married, Let Them Eat, and Her Shoes.
