“Man In Nature”

Man in Nature presents two views of man’s impact on our natural world. In the first view, Duffy looks at the impact of limestone quarrying on the environment. His photos show the serenity of the environment sans “man.” He also looks at quarrying the limestone in that natural world.  These are the quarries in southern Indiana that produce the finest limestone used in our major buildings like the National Cathedral and Empire State Building.  While the quarries destroy the natural environment, we can see a different kind of beauty in the quarries in the workers harvesting and fabricating the limestone. 

In his second man/nature view he looks at small family farming in southern Indiana. The farmers seek to improve the environment through their sustainable farming practices but unfortunately their efforts do not produce a living wage.  As a result we see the decay of rural America.

“A Moment In Time”

Stevens’ black and white photographs capture the magical and spiritual quality a camera can record. These photographs capture the essence and spirit of a place. Using this light sensitive medium, the artist captures a moment in time and the illusive quality of light.

The photographs document approaching storms using infrared film. Storms can bring sudden and transforming experiences to the people who experience them. There is a very energetic and overwhelming energy that precedes a storm. These photographs are metaphors for personal struggles that people experience in their lives.

“Recent Drawings”

This series of recent drawings are inspired by machine aesthetics and reference common tools and domestic utilitarian objects. Gondek’s process begins with digital manipulations from vintage consumer catalogues published in the early 1900’s such as Pratt and Whitney tools, and the Enterprise Manufacturing Company, maker of domestic gadgets. The digitally printed elements she composes recall blueprints or plans, and create a foundation and under drawing for the modification of the context of these implements. 

Drawing from observation of actual objects allows for transposition and mutability between layers of printed and drawn information. The objects explored are simultaneously transformed denying their original functional purpose and asserting an animated physical presence and internal narrative.

As one of the oldest and largest non-profit galleries in Chicago, ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation (ARC) has a long and distinguished history as a cultural institution in the city. Founded in 1973 as an all-female, all-volunteer organization, ARC not only provided exhibition space to 2-D and 3-D artists, but installation and video arts.  

ARC’s mission is to bring innovative, emerging and experimental visual art, to a wide range of viewers, and to provide a nurturing atmosphere for the continued development of artistic potential and dialogue. Celebrating 43 years in existence, ARC provides exhibition opportunities and support to artists, across all artistic disciplines including performance, sound, and video. The support ARC offers includes: professional presentation of work, significant financial subsidy of gallery space, group and themed show opportunities, and feedback and encouragement to young and emerging artists.  

Celebrate another great year of existence at its opening reception on September 30th from 6pm-9pm!
