Opening Reception, November 7 2014

We had a great turn out for Ruti Modlin’s PENTIMENTO, Laura Cloud’s multi media “Sky Impressions and other thoughts” and Candace Law’s encaustic/mixed media – “Improvisus” at ARC Gallery on Friday, Nov 11. The show is running through November 22 – please stop by!

IMPROVISUS by Candace Law

Join us for our Opening, Friday, Nov. 7 from 6-9 pm

Candace Law’s mixed-media work, Improvisus,  combines encaustic with various materials and found objects to explore the juxtaposition of the man-made with the abstract. Some of her works are intuitive and free-flowing, with a layered, atmospheric feel that is unique to this ancient art form. In others, there is a more formal organization that reaches back to her training in architectural illustration. Law embeds rust prints in the encaustic, often with figure drawings or rusted hardware. Transferring rust from an object to paper creates a beauty of color and pattern that evokes a rebirth from industrial decay and is a metaphor for childhood roots and memories. She also plays with the concept of a “meme”-a cultural idea that spreads, akin to a virus-by incorporating shredded writings in the encaustic.

Show runs from 10/29/2014 to 11/22/2014

SKY IMPRESSIONS AND OTHER THOUGHTS by Laura Cloud

Join us for our Opening Reception, Friday, Nov. 7 from 6-9 pm

Laura Cloud is known for her mixed media installations that use voice, sound and scent as part of the sensuous expression of her ideas. She perceives of a work as something sensory, which we inhabit. We are asked to be “there”, as if we as audience are part of the installation.  In this work, Sky Impressions, we are asked to be present to notice something from our universal everyday lives; here, we see the variations of mood from a small patch of sky, which changes with the humidity, time of day, location and light.  We experience the many subtle shifts of color, light and impressions.  Because the works are printed on artists’ paper, the works appear to be subtle paintings, with the image softly embedded in its material support.  Here, photograph seems not mechanical, but something hand-made, as if light and color has been infused into the paper surface.  The work is rich with atmosphere, and engages our universal love of nature.

PENTIMENTO 2014 by Ruti Modlin

Join us for our Opening, Friday, Nov. 7 from 6-9 pm

Ruti Modlin is a figurative artist who previously lived in Europe and Africa and has recently returned from a retreat in Eygaliéres in the South of France.

In this new exhibit, titled Pentimento, she takes her old painted canvases and recycles them into new expressive work.  In some instances she allows the previous lines to show through, elaborating on the idea of “pentimento” where the artist “repents” or changes her mind, allowing new concepts to filter through. The interaction between the two layers, create new tensions and dynamics.

The show runs from 10/29/2014 to 11/22/2014
