 Scorched Earth

Scorched Earth is part of an ongoing body of work concerning the cycles of life. InScorched Earth, Lynn Christine Kelly expands her investigation of the intimate cycles within a family, of life, death, migration, and relocation in conjunction with the biological concepts of growth, decay, regrowth and rebirth.  Her ongoing interest in the temporality of geological and constructed forms merges with the concept of human existence and our interaction with the rest of the natural environment.

Femme Schism: Warrior Women Still Love Baking Cakes

Tiffany L. Pascal’s Femme Schism: Warrior Women Still Love Baking Cakes, is a series of irreverent watercolors that undulate across gallery walls as clusters of satirical commentary on women’s experiences.  Sweetly sarcastic, her work examines the girlfriends, warriors, intellectuals, damsels, and sexpots that prevail in art, literature, comics, and film.  These women challenge gender norms while simultaneously conforming to the feminine archetypes that imprison them.

Pascal incorporates the visual language of contemporary comic art to both subvert and honor the medium in which female stock characters are perpetuated.  By re-contextualizing these archetypes into the contemporary struggle of women and girls around the world, Pascal’s works on paper comprise a parody of epic narratives and a redefinition of conceptions of femininity.

Carolyne King

A Delicate Balance

There are two main concepts artist Carolyne King focuses on in her artistic body of work. First, is the notion that everything is connected and second is that the search for the self is the path to artistic and spiritual enlightenment. To paraphrase Joseph Campbell: When the realization that who a person is on the inside is the same as the universe around them, it allows for a meaningful artistic exchange. Her exhibit, A Delicate Balance, is evocative of this idea. It is the search into, and connection to, the microscopic, unseen universe that surrounds us and the universe that lives within us. It is the cells that make up our whole being and the cells that make up the natural world around us. King’s artwork is a reflection of her belief that we are on a continuous and circuitous path of creation, illumination, and spiritual progression towards a persons place within the universe.
