Joe Steiner

This exhibit, Reflections: 50 Years of Self Portraits by Joe Steiner, began 50 years ago. Steiner has always preferred painting from life and originally turned to him-self as a subject when he didn’t have access to other models. Over the years, he began to view self portraits as a means to record his life and how he has been affected by the things that have happened to him. As he has grown older, Steiner has become more and more interested in how he is aging. His paintings of others convey how people from different walks of life feel and present themselves. Through his self portraits, Steiner expresses who he is, how he sees himself and how he feels about himself in the world around him.

In her exhibition, Roam, Shelley Gilchrist presents new paintings and a wall sculpture inspired by her recent artist residency in Rome. The city’s curved streets, piazzas, hills, domes and umbrella pines resonate with the artist, whose organic style abounds with curvilinear motifs. In a seventeen-piece installation of acrylic paintings, she traces her daily walks in the city and adds linear riffs and variations of those paths. These reflect a visitor’s inescapable awareness of the millions who have trod similar passages for centuries, through Rome’s layers of history. In addition, the exhibit includes sculptural encaustic paintings that have sea and landscape elements.
